Residential Dumpster Rental across Cape Cod, from the Canal to Provincetown

Cape homes vary enough that one container does not fit all of them. A tight driveway in a village center or a cottage lot near the water wants a 10 or a 15 set down carefully; a bigger lot inland may have room for a 20 or a 30. Our 10 and 15 yard containers suit most driveways and everyday projects without taking up unnecessary space, and the first thing we ask on the phone is what your driveway looks like — whether it is a year-round home, a seasonal property or a coastal neighborhood.

Most residential jobs are one of three things: a cleanout (a garage, an attic, an estate, or a house before a move or downsizing), a remodel (kitchen, bath, flooring, roof), or the yard — landscaping work or storm cleanup. Each wants a different size and a different talk about weight. The size comparison covers the numbers, the rental period guide covers the timing, and the phone call covers your job.

What actually fills a residential container

Cleanouts lead the way: years of stored items from a garage or attic, an estate cleanout handled efficiently and respectfully, unwanted furniture and household items before a move or downsizing. Remodels are next — drywall, flooring, cabinets and fixtures from a kitchen, a bath or a whole room. Then the outdoor jobs: shingles off a roof, small branches and yard waste after landscaping work or a storm, kept in their own load.

The alternative is the town drop-off, and it only goes so far. Falmouth residents with a sticker can bring pickup-truck and trailer loads of construction debris to the Town's Waste Management Facility; the Barnstable Transfer Station takes construction debris only in vehicles up to 5 cubic yards; the Mashpee and Sandwich transfer stations do not take demolition or building material; and Brewster's Recycling Center is for Brewster residents and Brewster-generated waste, with lumber cut to 4 feet. Instead of repeated trips to the transfer station, a roll-off takes the whole job in one go.

Driveway placement, street rules and HOAs

On the Cape the driveway comes first. A driveway or paved area works best; protective boards can go under the container on request, and on concrete, asphalt or pavers we recommend boards or plywood under the contact points. Keep the spot clear of sidewalks, utilities and drainage areas. Every size we run is over 6 cubic yards, and under the Massachusetts fire code a rubbish container over 6 cubic yards needs a permit from the head of the local fire department unless it is delivered and removed in the same business day (527 CMR 1.00, Table 1.12.8.5); containers must also be marked with the name and phone number of the company that can be reached in an emergency (1.12.8.5.2). In Falmouth the property owner, tenant or generator obtains that permit, and the Fire Department checks that the container is at least 10 feet from the building and does not block an exit. We walk you through it when you book.

The street is another matter, and it depends on the town. In Falmouth and Barnstable we found no Town permit for a container in a street, so we do not plan on one. Elsewhere the rule is written down: Bourne needs Select Board approval for any dumpster or roll-off on a public way, with a 20-foot clear lane on two-way streets, 10 feet on one-way, and amber lights or reflectors at night (Traffic Rules § 4.5); Mashpee needs the DPW Director's written permission before anything is placed on a Town highway (Bylaw § 150-2); Harwich needs a written licence from the Director of Highways and Maintenance to obstruct any public or private way, driveways excepted (§ 255-1); Chatham bars obstructions in the road layout that block parking or pedestrians (§ 208-16C); Wellfleet needs written Selectboard permission (§§ 204-2, 204-3); Truro needs a Building Commissioner permit to put building materials or rubbish on a town way (§ 1-9-12); and in Provincetown anything construction-related on a street needs Public Safety permission, and blocking a street needs a paid police detail (§§ 11-6-3-2, 11-6-3-1). On the MassDOT-owned stretches of Routes 6, 6A, 28, 28A, 130, 134, 137 and 151, state law bars any obstruction without MassDOT's written permit (M.G.L. c.81 §21), and MassDOT has no permit type for a container. HOA rules can cover containers on your lot too, so let us know about them. Each town page says what that town asks for.

Residential dumpster rental — the Massachusetts specifics

Massachusetts keeps a list of things that cannot go in the trash, and it shapes what goes in a home dumpster. MassDEP bans these from disposal (310 CMR 19.017): asphalt pavement, brick and concrete; metal; wood (from landfills); clean gypsum wallboard; mattresses and box springs, and textiles such as clothing, bedding and curtains (both since 1 November 2022); white goods, meaning large appliances; picture-tube TVs and monitors; lead-acid batteries; whole tires (from landfills); leaves and yard waste; recyclable paper and cardboard; and glass, metal and plastic bottles, cans and jars. The construction materials on that list are fine in a roll-off, because mixed construction loads go to a handling facility that separates them out; the household items are not. Our own list stays out too — paint, solvents and automotive fluids, fuel and propane tanks, batteries, electronics, tires, medical waste, asbestos and hazardous chemicals. Falmouth goes a step further and requires everyone to recycle what is on the state ban list. If you are unsure about an item, call before loading it — the what can and cannot go in guide says where the rest goes.

Answers

Residential Dumpster Rental — your questions answered

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

Our drivers take care during placement to minimize surface damage, and protective boards can go under the container on request. On concrete, asphalt or pavers we recommend plywood or protective boards under the contact points — ask before delivery so it is planned.

Can I put the dumpster on the street instead?

Only where the town allows it. In Falmouth and Barnstable we found no Town permit for a container in a street, so the driveway is the plan. Bourne needs Select Board approval for any dumpster on a public way (Traffic Rules § 4.5), Mashpee needs the DPW Director's written permission (Bylaw § 150-2), and Harwich needs a written licence to obstruct a way (§ 255-1). On a MassDOT-owned stretch of Route 6, 28 or 28A we found no permit path for a container at all. The driveway is always simpler.

Does my HOA have a say?

Often, yes. HOA rules can cover containers on your lot, and we do not know your association's rules — let us know about them when you book, along with any limited access or a tight driveway, and we plan the delivery around them.

Can I put old appliances or a mattress in the dumpster?

No. Massachusetts bans white goods — large appliances — and mattresses and box springs from disposal (310 CMR 19.017), so they stay out of the dumpster. Our junk removal crew takes appliances for recycling, and can take a mattress once the destination and any cost are confirmed at booking.

How long can I keep the container?

Standard rentals typically include a 7-day rental period — five to seven days on the 10 and 15 yard — and your quote confirms it. Need longer? Call before the period ends and we extend it for an added daily or weekly fee. Finished early? Call or text and we adjust the pickup.

Do you serve all of Cape Cod?

Yes — all fifteen towns, from Bourne and Falmouth to Chatham, Orleans and Provincetown, with their own pages for Barnstable's villages of Hyannis, Osterville, Centerville and Cotuit. Each page says plainly what that town requires for a container in the street and who may haul. We are licensed and insured.
