Local knowledge
Getting our bearings in Chatham
Knowing a city properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.
- Licence and inspection — a Board of Health licence to haul refuse on Chatham's streets, renewed each January after a vehicle inspection (§ 8.1).
- Tarped or netted — loads carried in an open vehicle must be covered with a tarpaulin or netting (§ 8.2).
- Road layout kept clear — any roadside obstruction in a Town road layout that blocks parking or pedestrian passage is prohibited and must come out at the request of the DPW Director or a police officer (§ 208-16C).
- Main Street parking — the Police Department says overnight parking isn't allowed on Main Street or in any Town-owned lot.
- Transfer station — 97 Sam Ryder Road, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed Wednesdays; demolition debris $225 a ton (fees effective 1 July 2026), from Chatham sites only, with documentation.
- Demolition review — a notice of intent before demolishing a building 75 years or older, with a possible delay of up to 540 days (Ch. 158); downtown, the Historic Business District Commission.
What comes out of Chatham properties
Kitchen remodels in 10s or 15s, roofing jobs in 15s and 20s, renovations and whole-house clean-outs in 20s (about 6 pickup loads), large clean-outs and construction in 30s (about 9), and demolition in 40s (about 12). With street obstructions barred from the road layout, size the container to the space on your lot — a 10 or 15 fits where a 30 won't.
What goes in: household junk and furniture, construction debris such as wood, drywall, flooring and siding, and roofing shingles — plus concrete, brick or asphalt in approved limited quantities, talked through before delivery so the load stays inside weight limits. Brush, branches and yard waste go in a yard-waste container of their own. What doesn't go in: paints, solvents and automotive fluids, batteries and electronics, propane tanks and fuel containers, tires, medical waste, asbestos and hazardous chemicals — that's our own list. Massachusetts adds its own: MassDEP's waste bans (310 CMR 19.017) cover asphalt pavement, brick and concrete, metal, wood (from landfills), clean drywall, mattresses and textiles (since 1 November 2022), whole tires, large appliances, TV and monitor picture tubes, lead-acid batteries, leaves and yard waste, and recyclable paper, cardboard and containers, so mixed construction loads go to a C&D handling facility that meets MassDEP's minimum performance standard. Tell us before you load a mattress or an appliance. The state fire code also keeps oily rags and hot coals, cinders and hot scrap metal out of containers (527 CMR 1.00, 19.3.1). Our what can and can't go in a dumpster in Massachusetts guide covers the rest. Leftover oil-based paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals and automotive fluids go to Barnstable County's household hazardous waste collections, which run from April through October (capecod.gov); off-season, the County points residents to MassDEP's list of permanent facilities.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Chatham
Who may haul: In Massachusetts no one may haul refuse through a town's streets without a permit from that town's Board of Health (M.G.L. c.111 § 31A), and the permits run to the end of the calendar year. Chatham's Solid Waste Facility Regulation requires a Board of Health licence to transport commercially collected refuse, bulky waste or any other garbage or rubbish on the Town's streets or into the Facility, renewed each January after a vehicle inspection, and licensed haulers sign an affidavit that only waste collected in Chatham goes to the Transfer Station (§ 8.1). We're licensed and insured.
In the street: no one may willfully or negligently obstruct travelers in a Chatham street (§ 208-4), and any roadside obstruction in a Town road layout that blocks parking or pedestrian passage is prohibited and must be removed when the DPW Director or a police officer asks (§ 208-16C). We found no container or street-occupancy permit — the Highway Division posts only driveway, curb-cut and trench permits — so the container goes on your property. You don't need to be home as long as the area is accessible and we know where the container goes. Our smaller containers fit easily in most driveways, and we place boards under the container to help prevent damage to the driveway.
Fire-code permit: Massachusetts' fire code requires a permit from the head of the local fire department for a rubbish container over 6 cubic yards (527 CMR 1.00, Table 1.12.8.5); a container delivered and removed in the same business day needs none (1.12.8.5.1), and every container must be marked with the name and phone number of the company that can be reached in an emergency (1.12.8.5.2).
State highways: Nothing may be placed on a MassDOT state highway without MassDOT's written permit (M.G.L. c.81 § 21), and MassDOT has no dumpster or container permit type — so beside one the container goes on private property, never in the highway layout. Not every stretch of a numbered route is state-owned, so we check the exact address.
Covered loads: in Chatham, refuse that isn't in a packer truck must be covered with a tarpaulin or netting (§ 8.2). Massachusetts requires loads of rubbish and debris to be fully and adequately covered on the road (M.G.L. c.85 § 36). Keep debris level with or below the top edge — an overfilled container can't be transported.
Remodel or tear-down: Massachusetts requires an asbestos survey before demolition or renovation work (310 CMR 7.15), and asbestos removal needs a MassDEP notice filed ten working days before work starts by the licensed abatement contractor. MassDEP's construction and demolition notice (AQ 06) does not apply to residential buildings with fewer than 20 units. Asbestos never goes in our containers — tell us if the survey finds any.

How it works
Booking a dumpster in Chatham
Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.
Step 1: Call and tell us the job
One short conversation. We ask the address and the town — in Barnstable, the village — what you are clearing, whether a cleanout, a renovation, a roof, a yard or a job site, what is going in, roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us.
Step 2: We size it and quote it flat
We recommend the right size, so you do not pay for space you will not use or run out of room, and you get a clear, flat-rate price that covers delivery, pickup, the standard rental period and disposal within the included weight. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size.
Step 3: Delivered where you want it
The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, on a flat, solid surface rather than the lawn, with protective boards on request. Often same-day or next-day, when availability allows. You do not need to be home if the spot is marked and clear.
Step 4: Load it at your pace
Keep it level with or below the top edge and keep the problem items out — paint, solvents and automotive fluids, fuel and propane tanks, batteries and electronics, tires, medical waste, asbestos and hazardous chemicals, plus what Massachusetts bans from disposal, such as mattresses, appliances and recyclable cardboard. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call.
Step 5: We pick it up and handle the disposal
Call or text when it is full or the job is done and we schedule a prompt pickup, often within 24 hours. The load is covered for the road and goes to licensed disposal and recycling facilities, with metal, concrete, clean wood, cardboard and yard waste recycled whenever possible.
