The 15 yard container in Cape Cod

The 15 yard is the middle ground: too much job for a 10, not enough for a 20. Kitchen or bathroom renovations, single-room remodels, flooring, carpet or drywall removal, deck removal, a garage, attic or basement cleanout, a small construction or remodeling project, a yard cleanup or storm debris — those are the classic fits, and it is one of the most popular sizes we deliver across Cape Cod. It holds about 15 cubic yards, roughly four to five pickup truck loads.

At about 14 feet long and 8 feet wide it gives you more room than a 10 without taking over the driveway, and it fits comfortably on most residential properties. The low sidewalls keep loading easy, which is why homeowners doing weekend projects and contractors who need flexibility without taking up too much space both land here. It handles mixed loads well — wood, drywall, metal and household junk together.

Space needed

a flat, solid spot about 14 feet long and 8 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), clear access for the roll-off truck to back in and set it down, and clear space overhead, away from sidewalks, utilities and drainage areas

Kitchens, floors, roofs and yards

A kitchen makes more debris than people expect: by the time the cabinets, the countertops and the drywall are out, a 10 is tight and a 15 is right. Flooring jobs are the same, and tile gets heavy fast. Roofs fit too — as a rule of thumb, a roof replacement of around 2,000 square feet is a 15 yard job — but shingles are heavy, so tell us about the roof and we help you estimate the weight before you book. Break long deck boards, posts and railings down so they load flat and save space.

Yard work fits as well: branches, shrubs, soil and storm debris from a seasonal cleanup. Keep it as a clean green load. Leaves and yard waste are on the Massachusetts disposal ban list (310 CMR 19.017), so a load of branches, brush and clippings goes to a green waste facility, and household trash or plastic mixed in spoils that. Mattresses and appliances do not go in either: mattresses and box springs have been banned from disposal since 1 November 2022, and white goods — large appliances — are banned as well. Our junk removal crew can take those.

Weight on a 15 yard

Usually about two to three tons — 4,000 to 6,000 pounds — is included, depending on the debris type. Roofing shingles, tile, dirt and wet yard waste reach that quickly; cabinets, drywall, carpet and furniture rarely do. Plan by weight as well as volume, load evenly and keep everything level with or below the top edge — an overfilled dumpster cannot be transported. The flat rate covers delivery and pickup, a standard rental period of five to seven days and disposal within the included weight limit, and extensions are available for an added daily or weekly fee. No surprise charges.

Suitability

Is the 15 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 15 yard for

  • Kitchen or bathroom renovation
  • Flooring, carpet and drywall removal
  • Garage, attic and basement cleanouts
  • Deck removal and single-room remodels
  • Yard cleanups and storm debris, kept as a clean green load

Pick a different size for

  • Whole-house cleanouts — go to the 20
  • Loads that are mostly dirt, tile or concrete (weight — a 10 may be better)
  • Household trash mixed into a green load
  • Paint, chemicals, oil, asbestos, propane tanks, tires, mattresses or appliances

Placing a 15 yard container on Cape Cod

It needs a flat, solid spot about 14 feet long and 8 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), clear access for the roll-off truck to back in and set it down, and clear space overhead, away from sidewalks, utilities and drainage areas. The driveway comes first. Every size we run is over 6 cubic yards, and under the Massachusetts fire code a rubbish container over 6 cubic yards needs a permit from the head of the local fire department unless it is delivered and removed in the same business day (527 CMR 1.00, Table 1.12.8.5); containers must also be marked with the name and phone number of the company that can be reached in an emergency (1.12.8.5.2). In Falmouth the property owner, tenant or generator obtains it, and the Fire Department checks that the container is at least 10 feet from the building and does not block an exit; in Barnstable the permit comes from the fire district covering the job. In Falmouth and Barnstable we found no Town permit for a container in a street, so we do not plan on one. Elsewhere the rule is written down: Bourne needs Select Board approval for any dumpster or roll-off on a public way, with a 20-foot clear lane on two-way streets, 10 feet on one-way, and amber lights or reflectors at night (Traffic Rules § 4.5); Mashpee needs the DPW Director's written permission before anything is placed on a Town highway (Bylaw § 150-2); Harwich needs a written licence from the Director of Highways and Maintenance to obstruct any public or private way, driveways excepted (§ 255-1); Chatham bars obstructions in the road layout that block parking or pedestrians (§ 208-16C); Wellfleet needs written Selectboard permission (§§ 204-2, 204-3); Truro needs a Building Commissioner permit to put building materials or rubbish on a town way (§ 1-9-12); and in Provincetown anything construction-related on a street needs Public Safety permission, and blocking a street needs a paid police detail (§§ 11-6-3-2, 11-6-3-1). On the MassDOT-owned stretches of Routes 6, 6A, 28, 28A, 130, 134, 137 and 151, state law bars any obstruction without MassDOT's written permit (M.G.L. c.81 §21), and MassDOT has no permit type for a container, so the box stays on the property. Check your HOA too. Protective boards can go under the container on request. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers

15 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

How big is a 15 yard dumpster?

About 14 feet long and 8 feet wide, with sides about 4.5 to 5 feet high. It holds about 15 cubic yards, roughly four to five pickup truck loads.

Will it fit in my driveway?

Most likely — it fits comfortably on most residential properties, and the driveway is where it should go. Leave clear access for the truck and clear space overhead, and keep it off sidewalks, utilities and drainage areas. The street is the fallback, not the plan: in Bourne, any dumpster on a public way needs Select Board approval (Traffic Rules § 4.5); in Mashpee, anything placed on a Town highway needs the DPW Director's written permission (Bylaw § 150-2); and in Harwich, obstructing any way needs a written licence from the Director of Highways and Maintenance (§ 255-1). If your neighborhood has HOA rules, let us know.

Can I keep it longer than the standard period?

Yes. The standard rental period on a 15 yard is five to seven days, and extensions are available for an added daily or weekly fee — just call before the period ends.

What is the weight limit?

Typically two to three tons, depending on the debris type. Shingles, tile, dirt and wet yard waste reach it quickly, so tell us what is going in and we help you estimate it.

Can I mix different materials?

Light household debris can usually be mixed. Heavy materials such as concrete, brick or roofing should be discussed in advance to avoid weight limit issues, and yard waste is best kept as its own clean load. Anything Massachusetts bans from disposal — mattresses, appliances, TVs, tires, car batteries, recyclable cardboard — stays out.
