The 10 yard container in Cape Cod
The 10 yard is the one we send when the job is one room, one garage or one weekend. At about 12 feet long and 8 feet wide it is the smallest container we run, so it suits tight driveways and limited-access spots across Cape Cod — a cottage lot in Falmouth, a narrow drive in a Hyannis neighborhood, a seasonal place on the Outer Cape. It holds about 10 cubic yards, roughly three pickup truck loads, which is more than people expect and less than a bathroom gut plus a garage cleanout.
It is the most budget-friendly size we offer, and it is quick to deliver and remove for a short project. Where the 10 yard earns its keep is weight. Dirt, concrete and roofing shingles reach the limit long before a bigger box looks full, and the weight allowance on a 10 typically runs up to two to three tons, depending on the debris type. Tell us what is going in and we help you estimate the weight, so you stay clear of overage fees and do not pay for space you will not use.
Space needed
a flat, solid spot about 12 feet long and 8 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), clear access for the roll-off truck to back in and set it down, and clear space overhead, away from sidewalks, utilities and drainage areas
Small remodels, cleanouts and the heavy stuff
A bathroom or small kitchen remodel — tile, tub, vanity, a bit of drywall — sits comfortably in a 10 yard. So does flooring, tile or carpet removal, a roofing repair with a limited amount of shingles, a garage, attic or basement cleanout, a yard cleanup, a small construction or handyman job, or a minor storm cleanup. Homeowners, small contractors, roofers on limited tear-offs, landscapers on small properties and realtors getting a house ready for sale all use it.
It suits the Cape because the town drop-offs are built for small loads and their own residents. Falmouth residents with a sticker can take pickup-truck and trailer loads of construction debris to the Town's Waste Management Facility on Thomas B. Landers Road, next door to our yard. The Barnstable Transfer Station takes construction debris only in vehicles up to 5 cubic yards, and the Mashpee and Sandwich transfer stations do not take demolition or building material at all. Anything more than a trailer load, or a job outside your own town's rules, is what a 10 yard on the driveway is for.
The weight line on a 10 yard
The weight allowance on a 10 yard typically runs up to two to three tons — 4,000 to 6,000 pounds — depending on the debris type, and your quote states it. Household junk never gets close. A 10 filled to the rim with dirt, concrete or shingles can, so spread it evenly, keep it level with or below the top edge, and tell us it is coming. Concrete and asphalt go in only in limited amounts. If a load goes over the included weight, additional disposal fees may apply, and we explain that up front. The flat rate covers delivery and pickup, a standard rental period of five to seven days and disposal within the included weight limit, with no hidden charges. Every load leaves covered: Massachusetts law requires a truck carrying rubbish or debris to have its load fully and adequately covered (M.G.L. c.85 §36).
Suitability
Is the 10 yard the right size for you?
Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.
Choose the 10 yard for
- Bathroom or small kitchen remodel
- Flooring, tile and carpet removal
- Garage, attic and basement cleanouts
- Roofing repairs with a limited amount of shingles
- Tight driveways and limited-access spots
Pick a different size for
- A whole-house cleanout — that is a 20
- Large amounts of concrete or asphalt
- Paint, oil, batteries, propane tanks, tires, asbestos or medical waste
- Mattresses, appliances, TVs and other items Massachusetts bans from disposal
Placing a 10 yard container on Cape Cod
It needs a flat, solid spot about 12 feet long and 8 feet wide (a driveway or paved area, not the lawn), clear access for the roll-off truck to back in and set it down, and clear space overhead, away from sidewalks, utilities and drainage areas. The driveway comes first. Every size we run is over 6 cubic yards, and under the Massachusetts fire code a rubbish container over 6 cubic yards needs a permit from the head of the local fire department unless it is delivered and removed in the same business day (527 CMR 1.00, Table 1.12.8.5); containers must also be marked with the name and phone number of the company that can be reached in an emergency (1.12.8.5.2). In Falmouth the property owner, tenant or generator obtains it, and the Fire Department checks that the container is at least 10 feet from the building and does not block an exit; in Barnstable the permit comes from the fire district covering the job. In Falmouth and Barnstable we found no Town permit for a container in a street, so we do not plan on one. Elsewhere the rule is written down: Bourne needs Select Board approval for any dumpster or roll-off on a public way, with a 20-foot clear lane on two-way streets, 10 feet on one-way, and amber lights or reflectors at night (Traffic Rules § 4.5); Mashpee needs the DPW Director's written permission before anything is placed on a Town highway (Bylaw § 150-2); Harwich needs a written licence from the Director of Highways and Maintenance to obstruct any public or private way, driveways excepted (§ 255-1); Chatham bars obstructions in the road layout that block parking or pedestrians (§ 208-16C); Wellfleet needs written Selectboard permission (§§ 204-2, 204-3); Truro needs a Building Commissioner permit to put building materials or rubbish on a town way (§ 1-9-12); and in Provincetown anything construction-related on a street needs Public Safety permission, and blocking a street needs a paid police detail (§§ 11-6-3-2, 11-6-3-1). On the MassDOT-owned stretches of Routes 6, 6A, 28, 28A, 130, 134, 137 and 151, state law bars any obstruction without MassDOT's written permit (M.G.L. c.81 §21), and MassDOT has no permit type for a container, so the box stays on the property. Check your HOA too. Protective boards can go under the container on request. Each town page covers its own rules.

Answers
10 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked
How much space does a 10 yard dumpster need?
The container is about 12 feet long and 8 feet wide. Pick a flat, solid spot such as a driveway or paved area, leave clear access for the truck to back in and set it down, and check there are no low wires or tree branches overhead. Keep it off sidewalks, utilities and drainage areas, move cars and bins out of the way, and mark the spot if you will not be home. Even on a driveway, a container left overnight needs the local fire department's permit, because every size we run is over 6 cubic yards (527 CMR 1.00, Table 1.12.8.5). We walk you through that when you book.
Can I put concrete in a 10 yard dumpster?
In limited amounts, yes, and the 10 is the right box for it, because heavy materials reach the weight limit fast. Spread it evenly, keep it level with or below the top edge, and tell us roughly how much there is. Massachusetts bans asphalt pavement, brick and concrete from disposal (310 CMR 19.017), so a clean load of it goes for processing rather than burial — keep it apart from household junk where you can.
How long do I get it for?
A standard rental period of five to seven days, confirmed on your quote. Need more time? Call before the period ends and we extend it for an added daily or weekly fee. If it fills before the job is done, we can swap it. Finished early? Call or text and we adjust the pickup, whenever possible with no penalty.
How much does a 10 yard dumpster cost?
We do not publish prices, because the number depends on the delivery location, the debris type, the weight and how long you keep it. The 10 yard is the most budget-friendly size we offer, and the quote is flat-rate: delivery and pickup, the standard rental period and disposal within the included weight limit, with no hidden charges. Call (508) 388-1861 and you will have a clear price before delivery.
