Construction Dumpster Rental across Cape Cod, from the Canal to Provincetown
A job site does not make one kind of waste. Demolition comes out heavy — concrete, brick, shingles — then framing and drywall come out light and bulky, then the finish phase is packaging and offcuts. We size each phase on its own: a 10 or 15 for small renovations, roofing tear-offs and heavy material, a 20 for framing, drywall and mid-size renovations, a 30 for new home builds and large renovations, and a 40 for major construction or demolition. If the project needs more than one container, we rotate them on a set schedule or as needed to keep debris under control.
Building debris is its own stream in Massachusetts. Asphalt pavement, brick, concrete, metal, wood and clean gypsum wallboard are banned from landfill disposal (310 CMR 19.017), so mixed construction loads go to a construction and demolition handling facility that meets MassDEP's minimum performance standard, where those materials are separated out. The town transfer stations are not built for contractor volume: Barnstable caps construction debris at vehicles up to 5 cubic yards, Mashpee and Sandwich take no demolition or building material, Orleans takes none from vehicles of one ton or more, and Truro takes none at all. A box sized for the weight keeps the job on budget. The Cape Cod permit guide covers the street questions.

Demolition, framing, roofing and finish
Our construction dumpsters take most standard building materials: wood, drywall, plaster, lumber, shingles and roofing materials, insulation, concrete, brick, stone, asphalt, metal scraps, wiring, packaging and general job-site waste. Heavy material — concrete, brick, stone, asphalt and shingles — goes in the smaller containers because of weight; framing debris, lumber, drywall and packaging go in 20s, 30s and 40s. Residential and commercial builds, renovations, demolitions and roofing projects all have a size, and each dumpster is inspected before delivery and positioned for efficient loading on the job site.
Demolition is a state matter before it is a dumpster matter. MassDEP requires an asbestos survey before demolition or renovation work (310 CMR 7.15), and asphalt roofing and siding, roofing felts and cement shingles are on its list of suspect materials. Asbestos removal needs a notice filed ten working days before work starts, and any demolition other than a residential building with fewer than 20 units needs a construction and demolition notice ten working days ahead. Asbestos may not go to a construction and demolition processor, so it never goes in our roll-offs, and we ask what the building is before we quote a demo job.
Job-site placement across the Cape
On a private lot we place where the driver can reach it and the crew can load it, on a solid surface with clear access and clear space overhead, and we plan placement to keep safety clearances and stay out of pedestrian and vehicle traffic. Every size we run is over 6 cubic yards, and under the Massachusetts fire code a rubbish container over 6 cubic yards needs a permit from the head of the local fire department unless it is delivered and removed in the same business day (527 CMR 1.00, Table 1.12.8.5); containers must also be marked with the name and phone number of the company that can be reached in an emergency (1.12.8.5.2). In Barnstable the permit comes from the fire district covering the job — Hyannis, COMM (Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills), Cotuit, Barnstable or West Barnstable. Hours matter on some sites: Mashpee limits construction and demolition equipment to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on other days (Town Code § 120-1C), Sandwich bars building work noisy to an abutter between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. (Bylaw § 3.55), and Provincetown keeps exterior construction to 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. (§ 13-2-21). Every load leaves covered (M.G.L. c.85 §36).

Construction dumpster rental — the local specifics
Every town writes its own rules, and most of them touch a construction job somewhere. In Falmouth, demolition in the historic districts of seven villages needs the Historical Commission first, and buildings on the Town's list carry a 12-month demolition delay. In Yarmouth Port and anywhere north of Route 6 in Yarmouth and Dennis, and in the South Dennis Historic District, demolition needs historic-district review first — the districts regulate building and demolition, not the temporary container. Harwich needs a written licence from the Director of Highways and Maintenance to obstruct any public or private way, driveways excepted (§ 255-1); Chatham bars obstructions in the road layout that block parking or pedestrians (§ 208-16C); Wellfleet needs written Selectboard permission to put building materials or an obstruction in a street (§§ 204-2, 204-3); and Truro needs a Building Commissioner permit to use a town way for building materials or rubbish, for up to 90 days and lit from sunset to sunrise (§ 1-9-12) — so in Truro, as in Provincetown, we check the Town's rules before booking. On the Outer Cape, a truck reaching a private lot over a Cape Cod National Seashore road with no other access needs a National Park Service permit (36 CFR 5.6(c)). Every town page quotes the section.
Answers
Construction Dumpster Rental — your questions answered
Do you do swap-outs?
Yes. Once the container is full we haul it away and rotate in an empty one, on a set schedule or as needed, and long-term projects usually set up custom pickup schedules at the start. Need multiple dumpsters on an ongoing project? We coordinate those and stagger the pickups.
Can I mix concrete with other debris?
You can, but it costs you. Concrete fills the weight allowance long before the box looks full, so heavy materials such as concrete, brick or roofing should be discussed in advance. We usually run a 10 or 15 for rubble alongside a bigger box for the rest. Asphalt pavement, brick and concrete are banned from landfill disposal in Massachusetts, so a clean load of it goes for processing.
Can you deliver to a site with no address yet?
Yes — give us the nearest cross streets and a site contact, and we coordinate delivery timing and placement with you or the site supervisor before the truck goes out.
Do I need a permit for a container on a Cape job site?
Usually from the fire department, yes: every size we run is over 6 cubic yards, and under the state fire code a container left past one business day needs the local fire chief's permit (527 CMR 1.00, Table 1.12.8.5). A street placement brings the town's own rules, and a demolition brings MassDEP's ten-working-day notices. We flag all of it when you book.
Which towns regulate construction dumpsters?
In one way or another, several. Bourne needs Select Board approval for a dumpster on a public way (Traffic Rules § 4.5); Mashpee licenses dumpster contractors and keeps construction equipment to set hours (§ 120-1C); Harwich licenses obstructions in any way (§ 255-1); Truro wants a Building Commissioner permit for rubbish on a town way (§ 1-9-12); and Provincetown requires a pest control contract for the whole time a dumpster is on site. Each town page says what that town asks for.
