What Size Dumpster Do I Need? A Cape Cod, MA Guide
The 20 yard is one of our most requested sizes. How to choose between 10, 15, 20, 30 and 40 yards by volume, weight and driveway space on Cape Cod.
Rental period · 7 min read
One of the most common questions we get from Cape Cod homeowners and contractors is how long they can keep a rental dumpster. The short answer is a standard 7-day rental period, with extensions when the job runs long. The longer answer depends on the job and, in a few towns, on where the box sits.

Standard rentals include a 7-day rental period, and your quote confirms the days. A week gives most people enough time to work through a cleanout, a bathroom or kitchen remodel or a roof without rushing, and the flat rate covers delivery, pickup, the standard rental period and disposal within the included weight limit. Fill the box at your own pace during the rental, and call when you are done.
Plenty of jobs run longer, and that is normal. We regularly support home remodels that span multiple weeks, contractors with ongoing projects, and property cleanouts with flexible timelines. Tell us the timeline when you book and we plan the dates around it, instead of you watching the calendar.
If your project runs longer than expected, extensions are usually easy to arrange. Call us before your rental period ends so we can adjust your pickup date, and we can extend your rental for a small daily fee. Keeping the container a few extra days is typically far more affordable than a rushed second rental. Long-term rentals, multi-dumpster jobs and repeat customers may qualify for discounted pricing.
Finished early? Just call or text (508) 388-1861 and we adjust your pickup schedule whenever possible, with no penalties. We schedule pickups promptly, often within 24 hours. You do not need to be present as long as the area is accessible, so leave a clear path for the truck and we take it from there.
A long job is usually a volume question as much as a time question. If the box fills before the work is done, keep debris level with or below the top edge, because overfilled dumpsters cannot be transported, and call us for a swap of the full box for an empty one, or an additional container. For larger jobs we schedule multiple swaps to keep the project moving, contractors managing several projects can pre-schedule swaps and recurring pickups, and we can coordinate multiple dumpsters and staggered pickups for large or phased projects.
The cheapest way to avoid a second delivery is the right size from the start. A 20 yard handles consistent debris over several days and is often the most practical choice for a project that runs a while; the 30 and 40 suit full building renovations and multi-phase construction. The sizing guide has the table, and for a job that cannot wait, our same-day dumpster rental gets a container out fast.
Heavy material changes the clock too. Concrete, dirt, brick and roofing shingles can quickly exceed weight limits, so on a tear-out it is often better to swap a heavy box early than to keep loading it. Talk to us about heavy debris in advance and we help you plan the loads.
When the box is full or the job is done, call or text (508) 388-1861. Pickup is usually scheduled for the next available day, and we schedule pickups promptly, often within 24 hours. Before the truck arrives, check that nothing sticks up past the top edge, that no loose debris sits on the rim or around the box, and that the path to the box is free of cars and equipment. We recommend not moving the dumpster after placement; if it needs to move before pickup, call us and we handle it properly.
All debris is taken to licensed disposal and recycling facilities serving Cape Cod, and whenever possible, materials such as metal, concrete and wood are separated for recycling, which is one more reason to keep clean loads clean. Business clients and contractors can receive invoices by email for easy record keeping.
Most Cape towns set no time limit for a roll-off on private property that we found, but a few rules work like a clock. Under the state fire code, a container over 6 cubic yards needs a fire department permit unless it is delivered and removed in the same business day (527 CMR 1.00), so any box that stays overnight needs one; ask the department how long its permit runs. In Truro, a permit to use a town way for building materials or rubbish lasts no longer than ninety days and needs lighting from sunset to sunrise (§ 1-9-12). In Provincetown, the pest-control contract must cover the entire time a dumpster is used (BOH Nuisance Regulation § 6). In Mashpee, empty dumpsters go back to the contractor's property until their next location (§ 4H), so a box is not left waiting on site between rentals.
A long rental also has to stay tidy. Truro's Board of Health counts a dumpster left open or overflowing so as to attract vermin as a nuisance, to be abated within twenty-four hours or another reasonable time (Sec. XIV), and Provincetown's nuisance rule lists any dumpster left open or overflowing. In winter, Provincetown activates an emergency snow parking ban on its posted snow routes when snow is plowable, and Yarmouth asks residents to keep items off the roadway and road edge, one more reason the box belongs on the driveway. In Truro and Provincetown we check the Town's rules before booking.
Book the delivery for the day the debris starts, not the day you sign the contract. If a demolition or renovation needs an asbestos survey or a MassDEP notice ten working days ahead, book the box for after that window. If a contractor is doing the work, coordinate the delivery and pickup dates around the contractor's timeline, so the box arrives for demolition and leaves after the final cleanup.
Near homes we plan drop-offs and pickups for the daytime: Falmouth limits waste collection to 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. (§ 191-10), and Mashpee's construction equipment hours run from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on other days (§ 120-1C). We offer same day or next day delivery throughout Cape Cod whenever availability allows. Have a specific timeline in mind? Call (508) 388-1861 — the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — and we help you plan delivery and pickup dates that match your project.

In Truro, a permit to use a town way for building materials or rubbish lasts no longer than ninety days, and Bourne, Mashpee, Harwich, Wellfleet and Provincetown need approval before a box goes in the street at all. We plan on the driveway, where the fire department permit is the main rule.
